A fresh Windows installation fixes accumulated software problems that no amount of scanning or cleaning can fully resolve. It's a significant step, but with proper preparation, nothing important needs to be lost.
Before You Start: Backup Everything
A clean install wipes the C: drive. Before doing anything else, copy all important files to an external drive or cloud storage. Specifically check: Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Videos, Music, and your browser bookmarks (export them). Locate your product keys for any paid software.
Step 1: Create a Windows 11 Installation USB
Download the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool from microsoft.com/software-download/windows11. Run it, select "Create installation media", choose USB flash drive (8GB minimum). This creates a bootable USB with the Windows installer.
Step 2: Back Up and Note Your Settings
Write down your Wi-Fi network name and password. Note your Microsoft account email (you'll sign back in on the new installation). Export browser bookmarks. Note which applications you use.
Step 3: Boot from USB
Restart the computer and press the boot menu key (usually F12, F11, F8 or Delete β check your manufacturer's documentation). Select the USB drive as the boot device.
Step 4: Install Windows
Select language and keyboard layout. Click "Install now". Select "Custom: Install Windows only". Delete the existing partitions on drive C: (or the drive Windows is on) and install to the unallocated space. This performs a clean install rather than an upgrade.
Step 5: Post-Install Setup
Run Windows Update fully (multiple restarts required). Install your essential software. Restore your files from the backup. Re-add your Wi-Fi network. Sign back into your Microsoft account. Configure your settings and privacy options.
Should You Do This Yourself?
If you're comfortable with the above and have a good backup, yes. If you're unsure about any step or concerned about data loss, we do clean installs across Melbourne including data migration and all post-install configuration β you get a fully working computer back.
